Meeting Description:
Students and parents were introduced to the Explorers program and were invited to join.
Guest speakers from the sponsoring corporations were present to discuss their respective companies.
Students also participated in a paper airplane competition.
Jacey Rogers opened the meeting with introductions.
Mike Phillips from AREVA, John Gaertner from EPRI, and Carlton Crump from the Mecklenburg County Boy Scouts were guest speakers.

Mechanical Program
Bottle Rockets

Meeting Description:
Explorers built and launched bottle rockets made from 2-liter soda bottles and other materials.
Other materials such as cardboard, paper, tape, string, grocery-bags (for a parachute), posterboard, etc… were used to increase accuracy, reduce drag, and improve flight time.
After the design and construction phase, the Explorers went outside to launch the rockets.
The rockets were launched in the parking lot of Building 2.
Jacey Rogers opened the meeting with introductions, Tiffani Teachey led the bottle rocket program, and Robert Sharpe & Daniel McKenzie launched the rockets using air compressors.
4 engineers from Duke Energy also volunteered and assisted with the bottle rocket program.

Electrical Program
Electronic Counter

Meeting Description:
45 Explorers built electronic counters using a breadboard and electronic components.
Some of the components included a 555 Timer, 4026 Logic IC, 7-segment LED display, resistors, and a 10uF capacitor.
Daniel McKenzie opened the meeting with introductions, Thomas Rogers led the electrical program, and Arthur Dailey discussed the balsa wood bridge competition.
Electrical and Computer engineering students from UNCC were invited to assist with the electronic counter circuit.

Welding Shop Tour
Nuclear grade welding school and fabrication shop

Carolina Energy is located right at Interstate-77 in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
The shop is about 14 miles south of the I-77 and I-485 interchange.
Some logistical items must be taken care of, to be allowed to come on the tour:
- You must provide your own transportation to and from this event. (Rock Hill)
- You must have your parent/guardian sign the permission slip, stating that you can go.
- You must fill out the Personal Medical Form and bring it with you to the tour.
Please fill out the form to the best of your ability (especially emergency contact info).
- You must wear "Closed-Toe Shoes" for safety reasons. This is a fabrication shop.

Siemens Power Generation has opened their doors, for us to tour their Turbine-Generator Plant on March 22nd.
This is an excellent opportunity.
We have been asking to tour their plant for over a year, and they finally agreed.
Please come out and tour this facility that we've tried so hard to gain access.
Siemens is located off of Westinghouse Blvd in south-west Charlotte.
The plant is very close to I-77 and I-485.
