Summary:

The objectives of the REU Site are (1) to provide meaningful geotechnical and geoenvironmental research experiences for participants and (2) to ensure access to the tools necessary for satisfaction and retention in science and engineering careers, with an emphasis on graduate education. As such, the primary activity involves linking undergraduate participants with faculty and graduate students to perform research.

This REU Site gives undergraduate students access to research that is funded in part by leading federal, state and industry agencies and organizations. Recognizing that students have different learning styles and work environment preferences, a selection of laboratory, field and/or computational research experiences is provided. In addition, a robust suite of weekly cohort activities creates opportunities for professional, cultural and social development. Peer connections will be strengthened through an REU “Learning Community.” Moreover, because of recent changes unique to UNC Charlotte and the metropolitan region, a dramatic increase in facilities and resources has occurred, ensuring that REU participants have a lasting experience.
