Dr. Hilger specializes in environmental engineering. Her research interests center around microbiological applications to pollution problems, so she has studied anaerobic digestion processes, wastewater treatment, water reclamation, and landfills.

She is a professional engineer licensed in North Carolina and an Associate Editor for Waste Management and Research, the journal of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA). She is the faculty director of the UNC Charlotte Environmental Assistance Office (EAO).

Dr. Hilger chairs the EWRI Sustainable Water Pollution Engineering (SWPE) Committee. She is a member of ASCE, EWRI, WEF, SWANA, AWMA, SWE, WEPAN, ASEE, and AEESP.
