Computer Support for Students

As a student of the College of Engineering of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte you are expected to be able to use and work with a PC system. Studies and assessments have shown that computer technology skills are an integral component of all engineering disciplines. Students who own and use a PC system for their academic work are enhancing their technology skills for the 21st century. Surveys conducted by the College of Engineering in 2006 and 2007 have shown that almost 85% of the engineering students have brought a PC system to UNCC. The PCS group in the College of Engineering has been set up to provide the appropriate support for COE students who own a PC system. Our goal and commitment is to do all we can to help the COE student with their personally-owned PC system. Beginning with the fall 2008 semester, the PCS Staff will provide the following services to COE students with personally-owned Windows PC systems:Student_Support

For example, we can install the Symantec Anti Virus or other campus wide licensed software. For a complete list of the software available to install please contact the PCS Help Desk.
  • Peripheral support, limited to those devices that have the appropriate drivers for the OS
  • Consultation on how to handle various PC responsibilities, including backing up your data or imaging your disk drive

Dell and Lenovo have provided the College of Engineering (COE) with loaner laptops for students. These loaner are housed in the Atkins Library. These loaners are available on an extended basis (up to 5 days) to a student who purchased and needs to have warranty work done on their Dell or Lenovo laptop.

These loaner laptops are also available to a student who needs to have software work done on their laptop (any brand) and leaves their laptop with PCS for an extended period or over the weekend. PCS will check the engineering laptop loaner status and if a laptop is available, PCS will provide the engineering student with a loaner voucher. The engineering student will present this voucher to the library and be eligible for a loaner laptop. The voucher will identify the student name, banner number, date and time of issue, expiration date and time on the loan.
