E-Mail Servers
There are three ways that you may read your UNCC email:
Use the Outlook Web Access client at unccmail.uncc.edu .
Configure a mail reader program such as Thunderbird, Netscape, Eudora, etc to use the server information shown below.
Incoming Mail Server: ironhost.uncc.edu
Outgoing Mail Server: ironhost.uncc.edu
Configure Microsoft Outlook in IMAP or Exchange modes.
NOTES:
- Your email password is not the same as your Mosaic password. Faculty and Staff may contact the ITS Help Desk at (704) 687-3100, option 1, to obtain an initial password. Students may go to http://ninernet.uncc.edu to get an initial password.
- Passwords are changed through an integrated password manager for campus resourcses called " PW Manager" . (See the links about PW Manager for Students and Faculty/Staff at http://ninernet.uncc.edu )
- The smtp process on ironhost.uncc.edu requires the use of smtp authentication . This allows you to use the UNCC out-bound mail server from off-campus locations but requires you to enter your password the first time that you send an email during each mail session. If you are reading email other than through Outlook in Exchange mode or through the web address mentioned above then you must configure your mail reader program to use smtp authentication.
- Thunderbird and some other mail clients default to "Show only subscribed folders" and must be changed before you may see your mailbox on the server.
- Student Account Retention
The following policy is on the Student Computing website (http://www.labs.uncc.edu/basics/ninernet.html#retention) :
Incoming students are assigned a NinerNET account when they are admitted. The NinerNET account provides access to 49er Express, email, and Novell as well as other applications. The NinerNET account remains in effect for as long as the student is enrolled in classes and for a period of one year following graduation. If a student does not register for classes for two consecutive semesters (not counting summer), the NinerNET account is inactivated and access to 49er Express, email, and Novell is removed.
Instructions for Setting Up Mail Readers
NOTE: You may use these instructions to configure your email client on an off-campus computer, however, using the UNCC server "ironhost" to send mail from your off-campus computer could flag the message as suspicious for anti-spam filtering systems. It is a common occurrence for spammers to forge or "spoof" the "From" address that appears in their spam mail. They do this to lure the recipient into opening the spam message and to hide their own address. Some anti-spam filters routinely compare the "From" address in the message to the real origin address buried in the headers of the message. If the two don't match in particular ways the filter classifies it as spam. Therefore use "ironhost.uncc.edu" as your smtp or "out-bound" server on your off-campus system at your own risk.
