Ad-Aware is a program developed by Lavasoft which detects and removes spyware, adware, and malware from a computer.  Ad-Aware can detect other threats such as dialers, trojans, malware, data-mining, aggressive advertising, parasites, browser hijackers, and tracking components.  There are three different types of Ad-Aware, the first one is Ad-Aware personal which is freeware and can be downloaded here.  The other two types are for commerical use and you have to pay for them, they are Ad-Aware Plus and Ad-Aware Professional.  The main difference between the freeware and commerical packages is that the freeware does not have the ability to do real time scanning.  The freeware package is not as aggressive in detecting and removing spyware, adware, and malware as the commerical packages.  However it should be noted that Ad-Aware does not take place of normal anti-virus software.  Ad-Aware is still a great free program, it has been downloaded from download.com over 228 million times and used by millions all over the world.
