WELCOME

Welcome to the College of Engineering computer support page. These pages contain information on the computing systems, infrastructure, and resources developed and supported by the Engineering Computing organization. This group of permanent staff, student workers and a director currently supports the College of Engineering, and supplies some services to a variety of other campus units, including Geography & Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Continuing Education. The overall system, as well as many of its components, are commonly referred to as the Mosaic System or just "Mosaic".

The Mosaic infrastructure is designed around the AFS Enterprise File System which provides single sign-on authentication, private and public networked disk storage, flexible user initiated file sharing, and robust online and offline backups. Using this system the EC group has developed customized installation, maintenance and update procedures for Sun and Intel based computers that provide users with a single environment that is available from any Mosaic system in any location. The primary desktop platforms are Sun Solaris (Unix), Windows XP, and Red Hat (Linux) based PCs. Each platform has a wide variety of available applications ranging from simple office productivity tools like word processors and spreadsheets to complex engineering design tools like AutoCAD and ProEngineer. (Mosaic Applications) In total, the Mosaic system supports approximately 160 application packages, on nearly 1000 computers and serves nearly 2200 users.

Engineering Computing also maintains student computing labs and classrooms in the Smith, Woodward, Duke and Engineering Research buildings and provides a variety of other services including web servers, distance learning classrooms and applications, remote access services for home based users, printing, administrative database support, help desk and telephone support, and hardware support services. This web site provides detailed information on the Mosaic system and service with a special emphasis on help pages, documentation, and user support.
