  1. The Sun workstations use the Solaris/Unix operating system, while the PC workstations use the Windows XP operating system or RedHat Enterprise Linux. Top
  2. When your Mosaic account is activated, a password and a user id are generated for you. You can change your password, but you Cannot change your user id. Instructions for changing your password are given in the Quicktips page for each operating system. Top
  3. Your files and documents are not saved on the hard drives of local machines. The Mosaic system has fileservers on which every user's files and documents are saved (H: and U: drives in XP). Your disk quota is set up when your Mosaic account is activated. If additional quota is needed, simply fill out the Quota Request Form on the Mosaic webpage. DO NOT STORE FILES ON THE C: DRIVE OF XP WORKSTATIONS!! THEY WILL BE ERASED! Use your area on the H: or U: drives! Top
  4. The Mosaic system uses the campus ITS' mail servers. For IMAP or POP mail readers the outgoing mail server and the incoming mail server is ironhost.uncc.edu. For Microsoft Outlook in Exchange mode on-campus the server is exevs01.uncc.edu. Outlook in Exchange-mode will not work from off-campus.

  5. You can access your Mosaic account from an off-campus computer using any secure shell program to connect to is-sm1.uncc.edu or by using MosaicAnywhere. Top
  6. You can transfer files to your Mosaic account from an off-campus computer using the Windows built-in FTP program, by using other file transfer programs such as SmartFTP or WS_FTP available from Download.com or by using an OpenAFS client to link to your Mosaic file space from your home computer. You can also use a web browser to access and manage your Mosaic folders and files. Top
  7. Because Mosaic uses AFS to manage disk space, you must use AFS Access Control List (ACL) entries to allow others to see, read, or use data in your area. Look at Access Control Lists for more information. Remember that after you change the ACL  you need to let other users know  how to access your directory. Every user gets a disk volume on the network Mosaic file system. When you log in to a Mosaic Windows system we then create drive letters which are mapped to certain folders in this volume. You have your H drive which stores your personal folders. You also get a U drive which is mapped to accessing certain parts of your files on the U drive. We also map the drive letter such as N to many volumes on the system. Our file system is a Unix based one and we have made it work with Windows. This is done as convenience to Windows users who are used to the concept of drive letters

To find out where your volume is located, open the File Explorer in Mosaic Windows and open My Computer.  You should see the H drive, the U drive and the N drive (you may see local drives). Open the N drive and you will see many folders. One of those folders is named uncc. Open the uncc  folder and then open the usr folder.  Using the File Explorer Search option,   search this folder for your Mosaic user id.  When the search completes you will see the folder associated with your user id. Copy this path from the File Explorer and send this path to those individuals whom you gave access right.  They will need to use this path in their Mosaic Windows File Explorer to access your shared folder.
