The MAPS Program is unusual compared to other university and college programs because it is student operated.  Our coaches, SI leaders, tutors, and student organization officers are the foundation of our successes.  Talented and passionate students are always needed!  There are many ways you can get involved with the MAPS Program and within the college.

Coaches

The MAPS Program hires students to serve as coaches for collegiate and career coaching. Coaches typically are upper class students who have a cumulative GPA above a 3.0, who are involved in the college, and who are passionate about helping other students succeed. The position includes holding weekly coaching sessions with students, attending pre-semester training, submitting attendance records, and working as part of the MAPS program team.  If you are interested in being a coach, please fill out the online application at "Get a job."

SI Leaders / Tutors

SI leaders are undergraduate students who have earned an A in the class here at UNC Charlotte, sit through the class again, hold 3-4 SI sessions a week, and attend pre-semester and weekly training. SI leaders are trained in techniques to support student learning.  SI leaders are not just group tutors.  Rather, they are expected to have a lesson plan for each SI session.  Many SI leaders write quizzes and additional problems to help their students grasp the material.  Students interested in SI leader positions can apply at "Get a job." For the Fall 2009 semester, limited to no funding is expected for the engineering SI program.

Tutors are hired to support students in specific classes. Typically, they have earned an A in the class they are supporting. In the fall, the MAPS program will be starting a volunteer tutoring program.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Student Ambassador Program

The engineering student ambassador program gives students the opportunity to represent the college to potential students and employers.  Students volunteer to help at events such as Discover Engineering, the COE Picnic, and Explore.

Student Organization Officers

The Lee College of Engineering is home to more than twenty student organizations. Some organizations are discipline-specific, but several are open to students from any discipline.  Being a leader in a student organization helps you develop your leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.  Perhaps that's why employers like to hire students who have been involved!
