Society of Hispanic
Professional Engineers
The
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los
Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city
of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of
professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community.
Today, SHPE is the largest and most influential national organization for
Hispanic professionals and students in engineering, math and science. SHPE
is comprised of over 8,500 members, affiliated with 38 professional
chapters and has over 190 student chapters in the United States, Puerto
Rico, and Mexico.
The student chapter
of The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at UNC-Charlotte was
funded in 2002 by a group of student that wanted to increase the number of
Hispanic students in engineering, math and science at UNCC. Our goal is to
help these students succeed academically and professionally. Promote the
advancement of Hispanic engineers and Scientists in employment and
education. Develop a retention program at the university to assist students completing their engineering degree programs.
Our student chapter
was founded thanks to the support of the
William States Lee College of Engineering and to our advisor
Catherine M. Blat.
